Frugal Friday: Downtown Las Vegas Deals

Las Vegas used to be synonymous with good deals and cheap eats, including lots of food at a low price (aka: the buffet). Times have changed and even certain buffets can cost triple digits!

So what is one to do? If you miss the good old days and want to relive a time of meal deals and cheaper entertainment in Las Vegas, head to Downtown.

Here are some ways to spend your time Downtown on the cheap:

1) Fremont Street Experience Light and Sound Show (Viva Vision)
  • Free overhead light & sound show! Amazing use of LED modules, colour, and music.

  • Themes change frequently. Current cool ones: Tribute to Queen, Don McLean's American Pie.

  • During the evenings, the shows occur once every hour, on the hour.
2) Classic Casinos - The Spirit of Old Vegas
  • Revive Vintage Vegas. Walk the halls of some classic casinos: Binion's, California, Fitzgerald's (The Fitz), 4 Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Main Street, Plaza, Vegas Club.

  • If you want to gamble, the tables and slots here offer cheaper minimums than on the Strip.

  • Great food deals (see #3).
3) Crazy Cheap Food Deals

  • Food deals are all around you Downtown! Look at all the adverts and follow your appetite.
  • Meat (e.g., steak, ribs) and seafood lovers who want a good deal a la Retro Vegas will be pleased.

  • My favorite pick: the classic shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate for 99 cents! And if you are there at the right time, a pianist may be performing live in the little dining area. Very vintage.
4) Artists and Live Music
  • Under the Fremont Street canopy, often there are artists are at work and live musical performances.
  • Enjoy the atmosphere while you wait for the next overhead light show!

Great ideas! I haven't seen the light show before but have been to downtown and it is pretty nice. Our highlight there was visiting the gold nugget at golden nugget. It was really nice!
@ EatTravelEat: The Golden Nugget is a classic! That's cool you visited it. Vintage Vegas is pretty groovy.
Hi Jules! So glad you're giving love to downtown! I walk down Fremont St. under the canopy to work everyday, and am always amazed at how under-appreciated it is. The deals are really out of this world now too: just the other day, the Fitz was offering $1.99 breakfast. Thanks again!
